Note: The following article is an account of personal experience with Ayurveda and allopathic treatments. Consult your physician before you choose to consume Ayurvedic medicine. |
Ayurveda vs. Allopathy is a debate that has been going on for decades as far as I can remember. I’m sure you must have also found yourself asking the same question, which one is better? The cause of this confusion is clear, it can be due to the evidence available in studies. Another can be hearsay. Out of the two, I would say listen to neither and form your own opinion.
This article is also somewhat similar to my journey of finding what is better for me and how I am benefiting from it. You may look at all the evidence I explored to find my answer and disagree with me in the end, or you may accept ayurveda as the natural course of treating ailments.
The answer is totally up to you, so I will also present the information in a way that does not feel forceful to the reader. No, I will not spoon-feed you the information down your throat akin to similar biased blogs. I will let my curious readers form their own opinion.
How Did Ayurveda Find Its Way In The Debate?
Ayurveda originates from Sanskrit word which is broken down into two words that represents “knowledge of longevity.” Ayurveda breaks down to ayus which means “life” and veda that means “knowledge.”
Ayurveda as the name suggests finds its roots in India. Its origins are found deeply in the Hindu culture, with Indian history boasting the benefits of Ayurveda. The typical principle on which ayurveda is based on, involves ayurvedic preparations. The influence of Indian alchemy or rasashastra.
These preparations include a mixture of metal substances, minerals, complex herbal compounds and other similar substances. Ayurveda is not just about herbs and roots, I found that during the ancient times, people were also able to perfomr surgical techniques such as extracting kidney stones, rhinoplasty, sutures and extraction of foreign objects. This just shows that the ancient Indian medicine was way ahead of its time.
So, in some way I was compelled to think that the current medicine sector has been able to come this far because of Ayurveda. It is a sensitive space to go into, and I do not think there will ever be a conclusion that is agreed upon by either side of the supporters.
Thus, it is best to just stick to the initial theme that was planned.
There are various versions of Ayurveda that underwent evolution as per the knowledge that people in those times gained. This is what helps improve the condition of those who believe in Ayurveda’s positive influence.
History of Ayurveda and its journey so far
Ayurvedic therapies have come down a long way through evolutions in more than two millennia. These therapies include special diets, herbal medicines, massage, yoga, enemas, medical oils and laxatives.
The ayurvedic preparations that are widely used across India and Nepal are pseudoscientific which means there is part scientific reasoning behind it, but there isn’t scientific method attached to it.
The history of Ayurveda and its journey through the ancient culture shows a transmission of medical knowledge from Gods to sages (rishi-munis) who shared it with human physicians.
With teachings from the Hindu god of ayurveda, Dhanvantri, then it passed down to a group of physicians through the King of Varanasi, who was a reincarnation of the Hindu god of ayurveda.
The oldest manuscript describes the whole ordeal with a slight change where the knowledge was directly shared with King Divodāsa (the King of Varanasi.)
Similarly, the Ayurveda has travelled from the lanes of India to the Western world, undergoing modernization and globalization. The notable contributions have been of Baba Hari Dass, an Indian yoga master in 1970s and Maharishi ayurveda in 1980s. The historical evidence of the ayurvedic texts appears in the middle of the first millennium. Along with the mention of terminology and concepts.
The emphasis in the ayurvedic texts has been on the dosha balance, which is a concept in ayurveda describing the imbalance between three substances that keep an individual healthy. These three components are vatha, kapha, and pitha. These can cause several types of disorders in the human body depending on the proportions that are more than the other.
What Does The Ayurvedic Texts Say?
The ayurvedic texts also emphasize the contribution of suppressing natural urges in causing illnesses. The three elemental doshas, and their balance helps in keeping a human’s health in check while an imbalance can cause diseases.
There are eight canonical components that Ayurvedic disquisition describes, which were worked upon to change at the beginning of the common era.
These eight components are what Western medicine studies as well. These eight components are what Western medicine is also divided into, which makes one think that the debate was futile after all.
Following are the eight components that Ayurveda divides its medicine into:
- Kāyachikitsā or general medicine
- Kaumāra-bhṛtya or pediatrics
- Śalyatantra or surgical methods to extract foreign objects
- Śhālākyatantra or ENT
- Bhūtavidyā or possession by spirits that can cause various mental changes in the person
- Agadatantra/Vishagara-vairodh Tantra or toxicology that deals with the toxins in animals and food.
- Rasāyantantra which deals with increasing lifespan, strength and intellect.
- Vājīkaraṇatantra treatment for sexual viability and wellness.
Ayurvedic practice also focuses on three separate elements that are capable of influencing each other and which help in taking a holistic approach to the diagnosis.
The classical ayurveda involved surgery in two of the eight components listed above. However, the contemporary ayurveda focuses more on maintaining good digestion, excretion and a healthy metabolic system. This helps in maintaining vitality, which contemporary ayurveda stresses on.
These form some of the reasons why I prefer Ayurveda over allopathy.
Allopathy And Its Origins
Allopathy or as popularly known as Western medicine, focuses on scientific evidence that relies on pharmacology to treat patients. The name itself is something that has sparked debate as several Indians have contributed to the “Western” medicine. Moreover, there is scientific evidence that proves that Ayurveda really did pave the way for Modern medicine.
For now, let’s focus on allopathy or western medicine as a treatment option and why I do not prefer it over Ayurveda.
The Middle Ages witnessed the rise of Western medicine that included a mixture of ideas that were already present in history. The Early Middle Ages saw medicine surviving on the Romana and Greek texts that were kept safe in monasteries.
The medieval medicine is misunderstood because people believed that church and God (no offense God and all the forms that humans worship) heal sickness. They were also of the opinion that sickness is a product of sins, astral influences and destiny. The funniest bit of this was that sickness is written in the stars for us. This is not the same as genetic predisposition which is something that Ayurveda believes to be true.
The fact that ayurvedic practice hardly differs a lot from western medicine indicates that there has been some influence over the latter. This just shows that western medicine has accepted the text of ancient medicine which has been shown to have relevance to current ailments as well. One example is the use of natural remedies for curing Covid-19 symptoms.
Why Did I Choose Ayurveda Treatment Than Allopathy
When you read up on the different ways you can allopathy has always been influenced by Ayurveda, you are bound to rely on the original than the copy. Time and again, it has been proven that Ayurveda and the natural ways of curing diseases are foolproof. They have been followed for ages and there is no denying that recent times have also seen significant health improvement with the help of Ayurvedic ways of treating illness.
The main principle of ayurveda is the doshas and prana (energy) whose balance and imbalance can cause illness and diseases. On the other hand, allopathy relies on evidence and is empirical. The former is more focused on using natural ways to reduce the symptoms such as herbs, minerals and lifestyle modifications.
Whereas latter promotes pharmaceutical drugs and surgery. Why would these be the reasons I choose Ayurveda over allopathy may not make sense to you. But it will after I tell you how I got to where I am right now.
This begins with the diagnosis of a skin condition that was related to a liver issue that I cannot clearly remember. In this condition, I saw a white patch that was appearing on my right ankle. I remember going from one allopathic doctor to another in search of a cure that would get rid of that patch from my skin. After a lot of trial and error, my parents found the cure in Ayurvedic treatment.
Ayurveda Was the Answer to My Problems
A famous ayurvedic doctor who is famous for her practice where I live, was where I found the cure. Obviously because of my young age and brain’s attempt to delete that memory, I am not sure what my treatment plan comprised of. But in a few weeks, I saw great improvement in the patch that was not giving in to any other treatment. This got me interested in the power of ayurvedic treatment.
I do remember that the doctor examined my pulse, and her procedure of diagnosis was very different from allopathic doctors who were asking for laboratory tests. Much later, I was reading up on ayurveda and its history.
This was when I found that Ayurveda does not rely on laboratory tests. Instead, it focuses on reading the pulses, inspecting the tongue and analyzing the symptoms that one presents with.
No doubt the diagnostic procedures that are now employed help the current population a lot! But it is worth noting that some of them are invasive in nature which can cause a lot of discomfort for the individual undergoing it all.
Most of the diseases are curable by Ayurveda, only a handful such as cancer may not find its cure in this practice. However, this may be partly due to the lack of proper exploration or missing text on the treatment of such chronic conditions. However, with cancer being higher in number now, there is also a possibility that the condition did not exist in ancient times.
Alluring Ayurveda: Other aspects that make me choose Ayurveda treatments
In addition, Ayurveda also focuses on taking a holistic, natural path of treatment, this is way beyond what western medicine focuses on.
Western medicine leads to side effects that can be difficult to control for individuals. However, it is also important to note that western medicine is known to have faster effects on the individual.
The natural remedies that Ayurveda promote are not just free of side-effects, but they are also great for the long-term health of the person. Allopathy has surely undergone more rigorous testing before it is prescribed to the patient.
There are different trials that a drug developed in allopathy undergoes which include several protocols for different diseases. The rigorous testing makes people believe it is a better option than Ayurvedic treatment. This is simply because of the bias and stereotypes that people have in their minds.
This is why allopathy is the dominant healthcare in many parts of the world, however, that does not mean it is better than Ayurveda as a holistic treatment. With the latter’s focus on overall wellbeing of the individual, it is easier for people to maintain overall health, than in case of allopathy.
Another reason why I think ayurveda treatment is superior to allopathy is because of the latter’s integration of non-pharmacological ways in its regime. Doctors have found time and again that just medicines exacerbate the condition for patients, part of which is the reason why increasing scientific evidence points to using natural remedies.
Can We Find A Balance?
As already declared in the first half of the article, this blog is based on my opinion of Ayurveda as a treatment. This is exactly what determines which of the two a patient will choose for their treatment plan. Thus, picking one treatment option to be superior to the other is difficult when we consider the different factors. Such as the type of condition. For example, allopathy may still be better for cancer than ayurveda.
However, the latter finds its place in cancer treatment for alleviating the other symptoms of cancer. A patient is suggested non-pharmacological options to help improve their emotional wellbeing.
They are also able to improve their quality of life, which is one of the most important aspects of curing someone. Especially in cases of chronic conditions, it is prominent that the patient will experience a decrease in their quality of life.
It is often seen in research and real-life examples that a combination of two types of therapy can help improve an individual’s condition better. For example, in the case of mental health issues, it is often seen that people experiencing the condition are not just prescribed pharmacological options.
Such that, for a patient experiencing symptoms of paranoia, anti-psychotics is not the only thing included in their treatment plan. They are also suggested non-pharmacological treatment such as talk therapy or cognitive behavioral therapy.
Even though therapy is not directly something out of Ayurveda, it is something that focuses on taking a wellness approach. This is one of the aspects of Ayurveda that accompanies yoga and mindfulness techniques such as meditation.
Close To Nature, Free of Synthetic Additives
If you are an aesthete, you would agree when I say this that nature has healing properties. This is why it is an important aspect of Ayurveda that I consider makes it better than allopathy. The natural remedies that it relies on and the way it promotes overall mental wellness, is something that allopathy does not focus on primarily.
One of the reasons why allopathy has higher rates of side effects. This is primarily due to the ingredients that are present in the drug. There are different components of drugs that can react with a human. This is the pharmacodynamic interaction that studies the interaction between drugs and human physiology.
In addition, the pharmacodynamic response is what happens when drugs find their receptors in the body. This elicits physiological processes that can cause different physical manifestations in the individual.
This is another topic that requires proper exploration, so let us know in the comments if you want to know more about drug interaction.
All in all, there are significantly less to no side effects that a person on ayurvedic treatment experiences. Unless a person has allergic reactions to the natural ingredients, it is close to impossible for an individual to develop side effects.
On the other hand, the development of drug is such that it involves different ingredients that can elicit an allergic response in the consumer. From the coating of the drug to the ingredients itself, there are higher chances for the individual to feel worse than before.
